Action shot – Kamea learning skills
I recently shared with you that for 2015 I was slashing my schedule and obligations, including some of my daughter’s (many) extracurricular activities. However, one of the classes we opted to keep, for many great reasons, is her karate class. It’s great for her development in multiple ways including self-esteem, confidence, mental discipline, exercise, and of course, self-defense skills. The dojo we visit is one of the best in the area (Scottsdale Martial Arts), if not the best.

Having a 4 year old in karate also means knowing how to tie her karate belt. Seemed like it would be intimidating at first after watching the sensei tie her first belt on her, which she earned by telling the class her name, phone number, and full address.
When we got in the car I told her not to touch her belt because I had to figure out a way to learn how to tie it.
I took pictures with each unraveling of the belt and have used those pictures to help me tie it. I had no idea if it’d work, but it totally worked. Phew… cuz I didn’t want my kid arriving with her Gi (her karate training uniform) in disarray.

PS. I’m excited to share that just this week Kamea earned her yellow belt. It required earning the white, as mentioned above, plus 6 black stripes on the white belt (you can see the black stripes on the belt that she’s wearing in the picture below). Then, to earn her yellow belt, and move to the next class, she had to perform Basic Form #1 in front of the class.
